Day 24 – “Growing Our Own Garden”

Standard

“Growing Our Own Garden” by Jaymie Gerard

Early every morning

When the sun has just come out

We walk into our garden

With our bucket and our spout

We give the plants a drink

Then we dig out all the weeds

We tend to all the flowers

We pinch off yellowed leaves

And then we pick the vegetables –

Tomatoes, eggplant, peas,

Cucumbers, zucchini,

Beets and mustard greens

Celery and carrots

Onions and swiss chard

Broccoli and peppers

All grow in our backyard

We bring them in and rinse them

Then we chop them up to eat

Growing our own garden

Is the most rewarding treat!

Day 15 – “Ice Cream”

Standard

“Ice Cream” by Jaymie Gerard

Last Tuesday something happened that had not happened before

My mother gave me ice cream, then my father gave me more

They kept on filling up my bowl – Why? I’m not quite sure

I ate and ate and ate until I fell down to the floor

A feeling awfully strange came on so sudden and so quick

My stomach did some somersaults, a mean and nasty trick

My favorite food in the whole world was making me quite sick

I just couldn’t believe it as I took a final lick

And now I can’t stand ice cream, I can’t stand to see its sight

I don’t ask for it for breakfast, don’t want it late at night

In fact, the thought of ice cream now really gives me a fright

“Hey kiddo, you want some ice cream?”

Well… maybe just one bite!

Day 14 – “Just Applesauce”

Standard

“Just Applesauce” By Jaymie Gerard

Why is there just applesauce?

There should be grape sauce too

And peach sauce, and pear sauce

And sauce of honeydew

Banana sauce, blueberry sauce

And plum sauce would be yummy

Pineapple sauce and cherry sauce

Would do well in my tummy

Sauce of kiwi and papaya -

A delicious tropic treat

And thick and fresh strawberry sauce

Would make my night complete

What fun to eat these things mashed up

I’m just a fruity fan

But since these sauces don’t exist

I’ll have to stick with jam

Day 5 – “Grapefruit”

Standard

Grapefruit by Jaymie Gerard

There’s one fruit I can say I hate

(Though others seem to think it’s great)

It looks kind of like an orange but

You’ll smell the difference when it’s cut

It’s usually a softball’s size

And yellowish or pink inside

It’s bitter, even with some sugar

The pulp, to me, feels like a booger

It’s just the worst, you can’t debate –

So Mom, WHY IS IT ON MY PLATE?!

Day 1 – “Peanut Butter”

Standard

Peanut Butter by Jaymie Gerard

Just the other morning,

My mother asked me, “Dear,

What would you like to eat for lunch?”

And I smiled ear to ear.

For when she asks me what I want

To eat, I always say

The same delicious, nutty thing,

The same delicious way –

“Mother, I’d like peanut butter

With a drop of jam.

Or maybe on an apple, sliced,

Or diced up with some ham.

I’ll take it smeared on crackers

Or mixed in with some cheese,

Or baked warm in the oven

Or frozen in the freeze’

On sandwiches, in root beer floats,

On pizza! On the floor!

Or smooshed between my fingers!

Or painted on the door!

Please, put some in the blender

And make it smooth as silk.

I don’t care how you serve it, Mom –

Just don’t forget the milk!”
